Breaking News From This Evening’s BUHS Senior Awards Night:
Broad Brook Grange annually awards a $750 scholarship to a Brattleboro Union High School student from Guilford who has been accepted at a 2-or-4-year college; the student must be a graduate of Guilford Central School. Among the fundraisers which help support these scholarships are our famous Brunches, such as the one coming up on Father’s Day this Sunday!
The Grange Scholarship Committee gives special attention to each applicant’s record of community service.
This year, the Grange Membership voted to award a second, one-time scholarship in memory of Marie L. Carpenter, longtime Guilford resident who died this past January. Sally, as she was known in Town, gave decades of service to both the Grange and the community. She became Guilford Town Clerk in 1971, a post she held until her retirement in 1984, after which she served a period as Assistant Town Clerk. Guilford honored her in 1983 by dedicating their Town Report to her. She was honored in 2000 with the Secretary of State’s Vermont Public Service Award. She was particularly devoted to the Town’s children, and was a strong supporter of education.
Mrs. Carpenter’s family designated the Grange, of which she was a longtime member, as recipient of memorial gifts, and the Grange membership voted to use those donations to create this one-time scholarship, also in the amount of $750.
The recipients of both these scholarships have strong academic achievement: And in a statistic I’m pleased to note is typical of Guilford students!, in this BUHS class of over 200 students, one of our recipients ranks 6th in her class, and the other: 11th.
Both have high levels of service to their school, local, and even global communities, and, as it happens, both plan on entering the University of Vermont this fall.
Broad Brook Grange’s annual Scholarship this year is presented to REBECCA ALICE POTTER.
And the MARIE L. CARPENTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to TILDEN REMERLEITCH.
